First-time mothers’ experiences of pregnancy and birth following assisted reproductive technology treatment in Taiwan.Mei-Zen Huang, Yi-Chin Sun, Meei-Ling Gau, Shuby Puthussery & Chien-Huei Kao - 2019 - Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition 38 (1):10.
Assisted reproductive technology treatment tends to involve significant physical and emotional commitments that can impact maternal, infant, and family health and well-being. An in-depth understanding of experiences is necessary to provide adequate support for women and their families during pregnancy and transition to parenthood following ART treatment. The aim of this study was to explore first-time mothers’ experiences of pregnancy and transition to parenthood following successful ART treatment in Taiwan. Twelve first-time mothers who conceived and gave live birth using ART (...)

Answering the connectionist challenge: a symbolic model of learning the past tenses of English verbs.C. X. Ling & M. Marinov - 1993 - Cognition 49 (3):235-290.
Supporters of eliminative connectionism have argued for a pattern association-based explanation of language learning and language processing. They deny that explicit rules and symbolic representations play any role in language processing and cognition in general. Their argument is based to a large extent on two artificial neural network (ANN) models that are claimed to be able to learn the past tenses of English verbs (Rumelhart & McClelland, 1986, Parallel distributed processing, Vol. 2, Cambridge, MA: MIT Press; MacWhinney & Leinbach, 1991, (...)

Preference of harmonic loudness degree on piano timbre.Yuxiang Cai, Yushi Ling, Guikang Cao & Xuefeng Zhou - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
This study exploratively conducted two investigations of timbre influenced by harmonic loudness. Investigation 1 examined piano timbre preference between non-processed melodies and two kinds of adjustments created via an equalizer–a basic tool used for sound engineering and for producing audio materials. Using the paired comparison method, 98 respondents were surveyed. The results show that in the bass range of the piano sound, the preferred audio material was that produced via an equalizer by reducing the loudness of the 7th and 9th (...)

    A Symbolic Model of the Nonconscious Acquisition of Information.Charles X. Ling & Marin Marinov - 1994 - Cognitive Science 18 (4):595-621.
This article presents counter evidence against Smolensky's theory that human intuitive/nonconscious congnitive processes can only be accurately explained in terms of subsymbolic computations carried out in artificial neural networks. We presentsymboliclearning models of two well‐studied, complicated cognitive tasks involving nonconscious acquisition of information: learning production rules and artificial finite state grammars. Our results demonstrate that intuitive learning does not imply subsymbolic computation, and that the already well‐established, perceived correlation between “conscious” and “symbolic” on the one hand, and between “nonconscious” and (...)

The Concept of Truth in Empirical Languages.Marian Przełęcki - 1977 - Grazer Philosophische Studien 3 (1):1-17.
The model theoretic concept of truth has thus far been applied mainly to mathematical languages and theories. The paper presents an attempt to apply it to languages of empirical theories. Such an application must do justice to some characteristic features of empirical discourse. The paper outlines the main problems which a model theoretic theory of truth for empirical languages is bound to face and suggests some solutions to those problems.

Mobile communication and ethics: implications of everyday actions on social order.Rich Ling & Rhonda McEwen - 2010 - Etikk I Praksis - Nordic Journal of Applied Ethics 2 (2):11-26.
Of the many opportunities and affordances that mobile technologies bring to our day-to-day lives, the ability to cheat physical separation and remain accessible to each other—in an instant—also brings pressure to bear on well-established social conventions as to how we should act when we are engaged with others in shared spaces. In this paper we explore some ethical dimensions of mobile communication by considering the manner in which individuals in everyday contexts balance interpretations of emergent social conventions with personal desires (...)

Research governance review of a negligible-risk research project: Too much of a good thing?Amanda Rush, Rod Ling, Jane E. Carpenter, Candace Carter, Andrew Searles & Jennifer A. Byrne - 2017 - Research Ethics 14 (3):1-12.
There are increasing concerns that research regulatory requirements exceed those required to manage risks, particularly for low- and negligible-risk research projects. In particular, inconsistent documentation requirements across research sites can delay the conduct of multi-site projects. For a one-year, negligible-risk project examining biobank operations conducted at three separate Australian institutions, we found that the researcher time required to meet regulatory requirements was eight times greater than that required for the approved research activity. In total, 76 business days were required to (...)

    Buddhist Mysticism.Trevor Ling - 1966 - Religious Studies 1 (2):163 - 175.
The word mysticism serves to draw attention to certain similarities in religious experience in both Western and Eastern religion, and it is difficult to find a really satisfactory substitute. What is important is that we should not suppose it to be a simple term, but should recognise that it has many variations. There are varieties of mysticism, recognisable by a certain family resemblance, and it is probably safer therefore to use the word with some qualifying adjective, e.g. Christian mysticism, Jewish (...)

The Law of Excluded Middle and the Problem of Idealism.Marian Przełecki - 1982 - Grazer Philosophische Studien 18 (1):1-16.
The law of excluded middle is usually considered as intrinsically connected with the realistic standpoint and incompatible with the idealistic position. This is just what Ajdukiewicz claims in his critique of transcendental idealism. The analysis of Ajdukiewicz's argumentation raises the problem of validity of the law of excluded middle for vague (or incomplete) languages. The problem is being solved by differentiating between the logical (or ontological) and the metalogical (or semantical) law of excluded middle: in contrast to the former, the (...)

German Biographies of Marx between the Two World Wars: A Comparative Study.Feixia Ling - 2023 - The European Legacy 28 (8):852-870.
This article offers a comparative study of seven German biographies of Karl Marx (1818–1883) that were published between the two world wars. The interpretations of Marx’s theory of historical materialism presented in these biographies fall into three groups or approaches: the orthodox, the neo-Kantian, and the psychological. Some biographies place Marx the revolutionary above Marx the theorist, while others reverse this order. Similarly, some of the biographies explain the relationship between Marx’s life and thought by adopting the “experience–psychology–thought” framework. The (...)

Archaeological Discoveries and a Renewed Understanding of the Chronology of Ancient Books.Li Ling - 2002 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 34 (2):19-25.
Studies on the chronology of ancient books are a form of basic research. They involve complex causes and factors that have to do with the formation of ancient books, include many of the mysteries and secrets of hermeneutics, and are a matter that deserves repeated study and research. In the past, the "doubting of antiquity" school of thought viewed ancient books with an attitude of universal skepticism, which might well be described as an overall rethinking with regard to ancient books, (...)

    A Quotation from Euripides.P. H. Ling - 1925 - Classical Quarterly 19 (1):22-27.
This famous iambic line is described—alike by commentators on the New Testament and by writers on the Greek drama—as a quotation in the first place from the lost Thaïs of Menander, and it is further stated that it was there borrowed from some play of Euripides no longer extant. In view of the revival of interest in Euripides during recent years, it seems worth while to examine the line in detail, and to see whether, in the light of our present (...)

From informational to emotive use: meiyou (`no') as a discourse marker in Taiwan Mandarin conversation.Meng-Ying Ling, Pi-Hua Tsai & Yu-Fang Wang - 2007 - Discourse Studies 9 (5):677-701.
Discourse marker analysis has been widely studied, leading Fraser to call this subject `a growth market in linguistics'. In our present research, we extended the study of discourse markers to the Chinese marker meiyou, which has traditionally been treated as a negator. The corpus studied here contains 40 conversations, totaling 482'27”. The analytical framework adopted in the study was drawn from van Dijk's model, which mainly consists of a semantic/textual level and a pragmatic/interactional level. A total of 141 occurrences of (...)

On December 30, 2003, the FDA announced that it will publish a rule banning sales of ephedra - a dietary supplement often utilized for weight loss, increased energy, and enhanced athletic performance - because it poses an unreasonable health risk. The ban will be issued under the auspices of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, in response to a process that began in June of 1997, when the FDA first proposed (...)

From the retailing revolution to the consumer revolution: Department stores in modern Shanghai.Lien Ling-Ling - 2009 - Frontiers of Philosophy in China 4 (3):358-389.
Following the Industrial Revolution in Europe and America, the market was flooded with manufacturing goods. To promote sales, the department store that stressed a “low profit, high volume” model appeared in Shanghai. Sellers lowered prices to encourage purchases, and used rapid and high volume turnover to make up for lower profits. To speed up turnover, department stores invented various devices to increase sales, including intensive media advertising, open and comfortable store spaces, and free and attentive services. The new sales philosophy (...)

Introducing new predicates to model scientific revolution.Charles X. Ling - 1995 - International Studies in the Philosophy of Science 9 (1):19 – 36.
Abstract The notion of necessary new terms (predicates) is proposed. It is shown that necessary new predicates in first?order logic must be directly, recursively defined. I present a first?order inductive learning algorithm that introduces new necessary predicates to model scientific revolution in which a new language is adopted. I demonstrate that my learning system can learn a genetic theory with theoretical terms which, after being induced by my system, can be interpreted as either types of genetic properties (dominant or recessive) (...)
